The number of new aviation careers continues to increase in the United States, and so do the number of people entering flight training. The US Department of Transportation reports that the scheduled airlines in the United States are growing and have been hiring new employees at a record pace since July 2013 resulting in the biggest year-over-year percentage jump since 2012.
While the huge Legacy Airlines in the US continue to grow at single digit rates year over year, they still added 383,800 employees in the first half of 2014. Percentage-wise the low-cost carriers are growing faster.
Spirit Airlines led with 12.2% year-over-year growth, adding 3,743 positions. Allegiant Air’s employee group grew 10%, Virgin America up 4.5%, JetBlue grew 4%, Frontier Airlines added 3,748 positions (up 3.8%) and Southwest Airlines added 45,523 full time positions for a growth rate of 0.9%.
The regional carriers in the US grew the most over the last year. PSA Airlines continued to expand, growing by 41.3% year-over-year. Mesa Airlines was up 23.1%, followed by Republic Airlines growing by 21.9%, Compass Airlines up 14.7%, and Horizon Air grew by 7%.
The incredible growth rate at the regional airlines is adding to the pilot shortage that is causing problems throughout the airline industry. The growth rate is creating great opportunity for those who aspire to obtain lucrative flying careers.
