American Airlines earned a net profit of $135 million in July. That is the second straight profitable month according to a filing Monday with the US Securities and Exchange Commission.
American has also rebounded on the operational side. The airline generated $2.33 billion in July revenue against $2.09 billion in monthly expenses, producing an operating profit of $240 million.
American entered Chapter 11 protection in November, and has continued to lose money through the first several months of this year. It posted a $234 million net loss for January.
The airline is waiting for a US bankruptcy court to impose work rules on its pilots that the carrier believes are necessary for sustained profitability, but there is evidence the Chapter 11 process has already improved AA’s balance sheet.
